ISIS: key agent of the coming apocalypse.

307796482Graeme Wood asks, What is the Islamic State?

Where did it come from, and what are its intentions? The simplicity of these questions can be deceiving, and few Western leaders seem to know the answers. In December, The New York Times published confidential comments by Major General Michael K. Nagata, the Special Operations commander for the United States in the Middle East, admitting that he had hardly begun figuring out the Islamic State’s appeal. “We have not defeated the idea,” he said. “We do not even understand the idea.” In the past year, President Obama has referred to the Islamic State, variously, as “not Islamic” and as al-Qaeda’s “jayvee team,” statements that reflected confusion about the group, and may have contributed to significant strategic errors.

Well, they better start understanding.

The Fermi Paradox and the End of the World.

The scientists from the Global Challenges Foundation and the Future of Humanity Institute used their research to draw up a list of the 12 most likely ways human civilisation could end on planet earth.

“One resolution to the Fermi paradox – the apparent absence of alien life in the galaxy – is that intelligent life destroys itself before beginning to expand into the galaxy.”

…I’m just gonna go watch that bear cam now.

On the Futility of Micro-stamping.

Image, stolen from: Cheryl Senter for The New York Times

Mike McDaniel, at Stately McDaniel Manor, makes excellent arguments against micro-stamping – relevant as that case is being fought in California now:

So California has implemented a mandate requiring technology that either doesn’t exist or isn’t effective.  Progressives often legislate based on the way they think things ought to be rather than what they are, and this time, courts may have little choice but to strike down what is clearly nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt at an outright ban on an entire class of clearly constitutionally protected handguns.

We can only hope.  Because this law, signed by then Governor Schwarzenegger in 2007, is not about crime-fighting.

Now, where did I put my file….

Florida Carry Appeals Norman v. State of Florida.

1112997366641_500X500And Bravo!  But perhaps its time to get some conservative legislators to amend the law.  I’ll leave legal analysis to others, as its Friday, and opining on this subject seems like too much work.  And while I wonder why AG Pam Bondi bothers with her fight on this issue, the facts of the case are straightforward:

Freshly minted permit holder Dale Norman covered his pistol with a “wife-beater” tee-shirt – that’s what he told a jury when asked to describe his method of concealment – and was promptly arrested minutes later when, unbeknownst to him, said ‘beater did not, well, conceal.  (State of Florida Answer Brief, p. 3; footnote 1)

I hope Florida Carry prevails, and/or Florida Law is modified on the matter, but the lesson here is simple:

Don’t Cover Your Heater with a Beater.

And, filed under the category of “You’re Not Helping,” as Counsel for the Defense, um, I’m not sure constantly making reference to said wife-beater was best practice.

Michigan GOP Official Fatally Shoots Herself Adjusting Bra Holster

bond1-800x430-690x460Berrien county resident, Christina Bond — died by accidentally shooting herself in the eye on New Year’s Day, apparently while adjusting her bra holster, according to St. Joseph Public Safety officers.

Basic rules of safety aside, I have no idea why the fact that she was a conservative makes a difference, but the anti’s never fail to amaze with their trash.
